Goal

You are the front line of every cardiology visit. The provider acts on the vitals, history, and EKG you collect — so accuracy and knowing when to alert someone are your most important skills.

What you own

•Rooming: vitals, chief complaint, medication/allergy review.
•EKGs and basic test prep when ordered.
•Patient comfort and clear communication.
•Flagging red flags to the nurse or provider immediately.

What NOT to do independently

•No diagnosing, triaging, or interpreting results.
•No medication changes or medical advice.
•No deciding a symptom is "nothing" — report it.

Scope note

This role supports safe rooming, vitals, EKG acquisition, prep, documentation, and red-flag recognition. It does not authorize independent diagnosis, triage, medication changes, or clinical decision-making.

When to get help

•Unstable patient — abnormal vital signs, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or looks very unwell — get the nurse/provider immediately.
•Chest pain with stable vitals — report it and get an EKG per protocol (you don’t need to pull the provider out of a room).

Interrupt only for instability

Pull the nurse/provider out for an unstable patient. Always report chest pain and get an EKG per protocol — but reserve interrupting them for instability.

Patient comfort & communication

•Introduce yourself and explain what you’re doing.
•Be calm and reassuring; cardiology visits make people anxious.
•Use plain language and a respectful tone.

Documentation tips

•Record vitals, chief complaint in the patient’s words, and meds/allergies accurately and completely.
