Basic Heart Anatomy and Blood Flow

Overview
The heart is a two-sided pump that keeps blood moving in one direction. Once you can picture the chambers, valves, and the loop blood travels, the rest of cardiology has a place to live.
The four chambers
The heart has two top chambers and two bottom chambers.
- •Two atria (top) — receiving chambers that collect blood.
- •Two ventricles (bottom) — pumping chambers that push blood out.
- •The right side handles oxygen-poor blood; the left side handles oxygen-rich blood.
- •The left ventricle is the strongest — it pushes blood to the whole body.
The four valves (one-way doors)
- •Tricuspid valve — between the right atrium and right ventricle.
- •Pulmonary valve — from the right ventricle to the lungs.
- •Mitral valve — between the left atrium and left ventricle.
- •Aortic valve — from the left ventricle to the body.
- •Valves keep blood flowing forward, not backward.
The path of blood
Follow one drop of blood around the loop.
- 1.Oxygen-poor blood returns from the body to the right atrium.
- 2.It drops into the right ventricle, which pumps it to the lungs.
- 3.In the lungs it picks up oxygen and drops off carbon dioxide.
- 4.Oxygen-rich blood returns to the left atrium.
- 5.It drops into the left ventricle, which pumps it out to the whole body.
Simple rule
Right side → lungs. Left side → body. Oxygen-poor blood goes to the lungs to "refuel"; oxygen-rich blood goes out to the body.
Plumbing and wiring
- •The coronary arteries are the heart’s own pipes — they feed the heart muscle itself.
- •The electrical system starts at the SA node (the natural pacemaker) and sets the rhythm.
- •A blockage in the coronary arteries causes a heart attack; an electrical problem causes an arrhythmia.
Key vocabulary
- •Atrium = a top (receiving) chamber. Ventricle = a bottom (pumping) chamber.
- •Valve = a one-way door between chambers or out of the heart.
- •Coronary arteries = the arteries that feed the heart muscle.
- •Oxygenated = oxygen-rich; deoxygenated = oxygen-poor.
A simple example
If the mitral valve becomes leaky, blood can flow backward from the left ventricle into the left atrium.
Which side of the heart is affected?

The left side. The mitral valve sits between the left atrium and left ventricle, so a leak there is a left-sided valve problem — you don’t need the details yet, just the location.

Anatomy is calm to learn, but the same red flags always apply at the bedside.
- •Chest pain/pressure, trouble breathing, fainting, or blue lips → get help right away.
