Patient Handout Workflow

Get the right education materials into patients’ hands — selecting, providing, and confirming.

Beginner~11 min

Learning Objectives

  • 1.Provide the correct patient education materials for the visit.
  • 2.Reinforce key points and confirm the patient has what they need.
  • 3.Stay within scope while supporting education.

Goal

Education materials only help if the right handout reaches the right patient and they know what to do with it. The MA closes that loop.

Step-by-step

  1. 1.Identify the relevant handout(s) for the condition/visit (per provider/order).
  2. 2.Provide them and point out the key sections (warning signs, instructions).
  3. 3.Offer materials in the patient’s language when available.
  4. 4.Confirm they have follow-up and contact info.
  5. 5.Document what was provided.

What NOT to do independently

  • Don’t give clinical advice beyond the handout or interpret results — reinforce provider-approved education.

Scope note

You distribute and reinforce approved materials; you don’t create new medical advice.

Patient comfort & communication

  • Point out the "when to call us / when to call 911" section.
  • Ask if they have questions and route clinical ones to the nurse/provider.

Documentation tips

  • Record which handouts were given and in what language.

Checklist

  • Selected the correct, provider-approved handout.
  • Highlighted warning signs and instructions.
  • Provided language-appropriate materials.
  • Documented what was given.
